Treating Hepatitis B - A New Breakthrough

Some time ago our club donated $5000 to the Doherty Institute to assist with research into treatment for Hepatitis B. Speaking to us last week, Professor Peter Revell AM told us how that donation became a first and important step towards a $5m government grant. This in turn supported exciting research that gained our main guest speaker, Laura McCullough, her PhD and opened the way for a new treatment for this dangerous infection.

Congratulations to Trevor McGilton!

At last week’s meeting, Dr Suresh Marcandan from Australian Rotary Health honoured Trevor McGilton with a Companion Award in acknowledgement of his generous support of Australian Rotary Health. ARH is Australia’s largest private provider of funding for mental health research.

'End Polio Now' Award for Our Club

In October 2022 members and friends of Brighton North Rotary committed to walk to End Polio Now and raised $3708, one of the leading amounts for a Club in D9800.  The Club was presented with a Certificate of thanks from The Rotary Foundation’s End Polio Now cause at the recent Central Melbourne Rotary’s Foundation Breakfast.  Thank you to all who participated.

Police Legatees visit Cambodia

In November 2023 World of Difference organised a tour of Cambodia by 21 young Police legatees aged between 18 and 27. The tourn participants raised over $30,000 for projects in Cambodia.  Another tour is planned for 2024.

BaySpeak 2023

BAYSPEAK 2023  REPORT  

The final of the Bayspeak competition was held last Wednesday, hosted by Firbank Grammar School. In total 38 students from 12 schools took part in Bayspeak 2023, with 12 students from 10 schools reaching the final.

Star Thrower Project

With the recent floods affecting the Rochester area this project has been designed to provide a well-being experience in the Queenscliff / Point Lonsdale area and an alternative experience in the Melbourne area.  

Toilet Washrooms in Cambodia

Brighton North Rotary together with World of Difference have been successful in obtaining a Rotary Foundation District International Grant (total $18,000) to renovate toilets in the village of Kok Tnoth in Cambodia.

Rotary Theme 2023-2024

Rotary International President-elect R. Gordon R. McInally revealed the 2023-24 presidential theme, Create Hope in the World. McInally, asked members to restore hope by helping the world heal from destructive conflicts and create lasting change within ourselves.

Sarsfield Bushfire Recovery

When the 2019/20 bushfires tore through Sarsfield, it left 200 properties damaged and 80 homes completely destroyed. The Rotary Clubs of Brighton North and Glenferrie together with Rotary District 9820 and members of the East Gippsland Fire Aid Committee from Rotary Clubs in the Sarsfield vicinity stepped in to assist.
