Inter school debating

This year's debate was held at Firbank Grammar School on Thursday March 5th. The subject was the value and efficacy of shark nets in protecting Australian beach goers.  The case for the affirmative was presented by the Brighton Grammar School team, with the Firbank Grammar School team presenting the negative case.

Each of the three speakers in the debate had up to eight minutes in which to present their argument. In his summing-up, the Adjudicator, Asher Husain, explained that his assessments were made on the basis of ‘matter, manner and method.’ Complimenting both teams on an exciting debate, he awarded victory to the Firbank team, noting the thoroughness of their research and the cogency and enthusiasm of their presentations.

The first Brighton North Rotary inter-school debate between Firbank Grammar and Brighton Grammar School was held in 1991.

The aim of the annual event, held on our Club meeting night, is to give students the opportunity to show their debating skills.
