Brighton North Rotary – dinner 27 July 2017

President Bill welcomed our guest speaker Asher Judah, then announced that Janine has agreed to be chair of Youth for the 2017/18 Rotary year, taking over from David R.

Chair for the evening was John B.

Committee Reports.

Secretary – Ross

• A thank you note was received from Bronwyn S, firstly for welcoming Prue Molnar from St Stephen’s Church last week and for the gift of the cyclamen when Bronwyn was ill.
• Information from D9800 informed us that changes to the Working with Children check will not affect Rotarians

Community – Lyn

• A meeting was held with the committee signing off on the projects for 2017/18 and willingly taking on lead roles to action them across the Rotary year. Lyn thanked her committee.

Social – Garry

• Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner – Saturday 26 August commencing with pre-dinner drinks at Geoff and Di’s home at 6pm. The cost is $50/head.  If you were not present please notify Garry if you will be attending, by next Thursday’s dinner.
• Rotary Golf Weekend - Brearley/Turner Trophy - Monday 19 & Tuesday 20 February 2018 at RACV Cape Schanck Resort. Playing St Andrew’s Golf Course Monday and Cape Schanck Tuesday, with 1 night at the Resort.  Cost $190 inclusive of breakfast.  Barb W & Lynda W will organise activities for non-golfers who may like to attend.  Garry is paying the deposit; therefore, attendees need to reimburse him on receipt of an email listing the details.

International – Malcolm

• Sabu Island project with Beaumaris Rotary for solar panels is no longer going ahead as the government is putting electricity to that part of the island. The funds may be considered for another project.

Membership – Peter K

• Peter announced that he has 3 candidates for the Rotary Leadership Institute. Linda T, Janine S and Geoff M.
• Peter will continue to interview newer members over the coming weeks

Vocational – Christina

• More volunteers are needed as reading coaches at Brighton Primary School. A WWC card is required.
• The 4 Way Test essay competition is happening this term too.

Youth – Janine

• As Janine is new to this role a planning meeting will be arranged in the next month.
• More volunteers were requested for the lunch BBQ on Wednesday 02 August for the Bayside City Council program against bullying for years 5 & 6 students from Bayside primary schools. Members volunteered to that request immediately.  Thank you to those people.

Almoner – Meg

• Bronwyn S has been in hospital, but is home and progressing
• Peter H and Alison A are on the mend
• Neil Graham is having a pacemaker inserted
• Chris W has a group of visitors but seems not as robust currently
• Don C, although not ill, is needing support as he closes TVPA.

 

Guest Speaker – Asher Judah

Asher is known to our Club in that in 1996 he was part of the ‘Young Achievers’ program being sponsored by Roy B and Phil W.

Asher has written a book ‘The Australian Century’, which challenges Australia’s thinking on its place in the world and how to grow stronger with many thoughtful ideas. 

                                

His presentation provoked many questions from members who obviously enjoyed being challenged!

Below we have captured Asher showing Meg the award he received in 1996, the Young Achievers Award. 

     

President Bill reminded people on property duty to put up our sponsor Kay & Burton banners each week.

Sergeant raised an amazing $170 – well done Meg!  Raffle was won by Chris who donated the $9 back, the total prize is now $522.

Next week our speaker is Riz with his person behind the badge presentation.

Congratulations to Ann and Bill on their 50^th wedding anniversary on Wednesday 02August.
