Thanks to PE Peter doing a great job as Scribe for the first time !

President John B welcomed members and quests, speakers Kim Groizard and Dr Phil Hill from Solar Smiles Dental Charity and new member prospect Mark Silver.

13Cabs BBQ

Gerry L advised that rosters were full for the 13Cabs BBQ on Sunday and thanked everyone for their support.

Mark S advised an email will be sent out on the Women In Rotary Breakfast detailing parking and possible carpooling.

Phil W announced that the two candidates for the Youth Suicide Awareness program this year will be invited to speak at the club in May.

NBR 35TH BIRTHDAY March 25th

Anne C announced that on March the 25th with be the Clubs 35th birthday as well as a milestone for the formation of Family Life, one of the charities supported by BNR.  To celebrate at our weekly meeting on that night, members are invited to buy something from the Family Life Op shop to wear to Rotary that night. Our president elect advised “No Cross Dressing Please”

TRIVIA NIGHT  Sat the 4th April 

Linn M announce we would be having a Trivia Night on Sat the 4th April at the St Stephens Church Hall.  More information to follow in the coming weeks.

LATEST PAUL HARRIS SOCIETY MEMBER

Mark S announce that Chris Fletcher had enrolled in the Paul Harris Society, well done Chris.

Virginia T advised that there is an Expo in Timor Leste on the 14th to 16th August to explore possible aid opportunities.  Virginia is looking to put together a delegation from BNR to attend.  More about this in the next few months.

CHANGEOVER DINNER

Peter K advised that the Change Over Dinner for our Club would be at the RBYC on Friday the 3rd of July. Ha also advised the dates for the District Conference next year would be on the 5th to the 8th Feb 2021.

FACT OF THE WEEK this week was from Geoff Dobbs. Geoff give an excellent summary on Domestic Violence and what Rotary Clubs around Australia are doing. The Rotary Club of Brighton launched Violence Free Families in 1995 after a local child’s violent death. The club has raised more than $750,000 for the program, endorsed by Rotary District 9800 and supported by all 70 district clubs and Women in Rotary. Other Rotary Clubs, Maryborough, Perth and Bendigo also have excellent programs supporting this cause.

GUEST SPEAKERS Kim Groizard and Dr Phil Hill from Solar Smiles Dental Charity

Our guest speakers this week were Kim Groizard and Dr Phil Hill from Solar Smiles Dental Charity.  This is a small group of self-funded volunteers backed by the Rotary Clubs of Albert Park and Fitzroy.

Established in 2015 and run by Australians, in 2016 received RAWCS – Tax deductibility status.

In 2018 they provided $125,858 worth of free dental treatment to children in Timor Leste. There are only 12 qualified dentists in Timor Leste.

The teams provided:

  • Tooth brush and oral health teaching
  • Fluoride program
  • Dental clinical treatment

Tooth brushes and tooth paste are delivered monthly to each village to provide the ongoing support.

Phil outlined the silver fluoride program which is the most cost-effective way of delivering this treatment.

The cost of the on going support is $2.85 per child per year.

There goal is for the program to look after 8,000 children in Timor Leste.

They are seeking support to deliver this program.
