Pro-active Policing and Home Security

Chris Dawson and Michelle Lindsey explained how Moorabbin are using pro-active policing strategies to engage with local youth at risk becoming involved in criminal activity.

We were also given valuable advice on securing our homes, valuables, cars and our own safety.

THREATS

Thefts from and of cars, especially ‘luxury’ models and aggravated burglaries of homes.

HOME SECURITY

Make sure that all doors and access points to your home are locked. Even doggie doors can provide access to burglars!

Better if your house is clearly visible from the road - high fences give cover to burglars.

Best protection is provided by dogs and by screech alarms.

If you hear or see a burglar in your home don’t be a hero - they may be armed and could react violently if cornered.

CAR SECURITY

Always make sure that your car is locked when not in use.

Later model cars are hard to steal so thieves try to get hold of the key.

7 out of 9 cars are stolen using the owner’s key.

Don’t attach your house keys or the garage remote to your car keys.

Don’t hide car keys at home - better to let thief find them without threats of violence.

Gyms have become a favourite target for thieves to steal car keys.
