'Artificial Intelligence is Dangerous' - the Brighton Grammar/Firbank Grammar Debate

The topic was ‘Artificial Intelligence is Dangerous’. Firbank Grammar presented the affirmative case. Their team put forward strong arguments based on the many threats posed by AI. These included plagiarism, fake identities, fake news, environmental costs and inadequate regulation. The Brighton Grammar team responded forcefully. They argued that human oversight and regulation are more than adequate, that the fear of AI is no different from the initial fear of other technologies we now accept and use, and that overall, the benefits of AI outweigh its risks.
Adjudicator Jonathan Lin assessed the teams on the basis of ‘Matter, Method and Manner’, praising both teams for their research and presentations. He awarded victory to the Brighton Grammar team, commenting on the strength of their arguments for the negative case.
For the audience, the debate was very interesting and informative. We were once again impressed by the high standard of the speakers from both teams.
