President’s Announcements:

Russell Burton sent the club a letter of thanks for being awarded a Paul Harris Fellow and made an Honorary Member of the club. He wrote he was very humbled by the experience.

He shared some comments from the Venturers; “They are not that old and it was fun” and “The Sargent was cool”.

He suggested the Scouts and Rotary Club join together again when Tim returns ad hear his stories.

He wanted to pass on his appreciation and thanks to the club for the wonderful relationship that has developed between Scouts and RCBN.

 

A reminder of the FED Up Lunch on Saturday 20 Feb. Auction items are wanted for the day.

Garden Design Fest- after an Extraordinary Board Meeting, the Board decided to continue to support Friedrich Ataxia research with honorary member, Dr Martin Delatyki, by naming his research project on gene therapy as Brighton North Rotary charity recipient for the 2016 Garden Designfest. The decision is many months in the making and is based on all three partnering clubs, namely Kew, Central Melbourne Sunrise and Brighton North choosing three charities that have synergy for effective marketing of this important event for Brighton North.

Secretary- Glennie M: On behalf of Margie Desmith, promoting The Lady In the Van movie starring Maggie Smith, to be held Friday 4 March.

Social- Garry B: Reminder of the Beach Box BBQ, Wed 10 Feb. BYO drinks, people are organised with salads and desserts. Make sure you have told Barb B what you are contributing. See you at 6pm.

The next club social event will be Barefoot Bowls, to be held on Wed 16 March.

Fundraising- Kate S: there is a committee meeting after this meeting.

International Women’s Day, Women In Rotary event is to be held Thursday 10 March. Tickets are $60 if you get the early bird price ( ends Feb 12). Please let Judy Caruthers know if you want to go as she is organising a RCBN table or two. Mobile no: 0488 050 884.

Vocational -Neil M: an email will be coming to you soon about the Vocational Excellence Awards. Please watch you for it.

Phil R: on 24 March, Allan Seale, the new District Avenue of Service will speak to the club about the new direction of Vocational in Rotary.

Youth -David R: Called for volunteers to assist with the Bayside Council Youth Conference on Friday 15 April. Many hands were raised, thank you.

Almoner - Robyn S: Lorraine Killey is home from hospital and so is Chris Warner. Both would love visitors.

Member's Announcements:

• Barb B- the RCBB Group Vocation Evening ( used to be GSE) has changed. It will now be on Tues 16 Feb, 6.30pm. $40 per ticket.
• Peter H- The Suzie Harris Classic Car Show, raising money for Motor Neurone Disease will be held on Sunday 17 April. Peter called for volunteers to help on the day. Need between 8 and 10 people. Let Peter know if you can help out as it clashes with the club’s weekend away.
• Richard P called for any old ties to be donated for the Fed Up Lunch. Please bring them along next week.
• Phil R- District Conference, 23 people from the club are going. Current registrations are at 861. The Saturday night dinner is being split between two venues due to the numbers attending. Everyone attending will be sent an email to request which venue they would like to dine at.
• Christina R gave the Fact of the Week.
• Rob Ward from RC Brighton promoted the Sportsman’s Night on Thursday 31 March. The theme is ‘Footy’s back and so is the Olympics”.

 The Evening's Speaker: Justice Jack Forrest

The speaker this evening was Justice Jack Forrest who spoke about the class actions in relation to the 2009 Black Saturday fires. This was the largest class action ever brought to the courts. He explained the enormity of the trials, the number of people involved, the collaborative approach used and the technology involved to manage the sheer volume of documents. The proceedings extended over 4 years with the final result being successful, ensuring that the individuals affected received compensation for their loss.

Barb B gave the vote of thanks.
