Guest Speaker: President Bill Heron, Person Behind the Badge

Bill has had an interesting life and admitted to having always been a “prankster”, a “miser” and a “hoarder”! This was his fourth Person Behind the Badge talk.  Below is a summary of his presentation:

  • Bill was born in Caulfield in February 1945 and grew up in Brighton. He has a sister who is four year older.
  • His parents married in 1940, things were tough, and it was “waste not, want not” in the Heron household. As a child in both summer and winter he “lived” at the beach.
  • Had to work for pocket money selling newspapers at the old Terminus Hotel (often managing to sell the same newspaper twice to unsuspecting Hotel customers!), collecting bottles, doing odd jobs, deliveries and paper rounds. By the time he was 16, had enough to buy a car but had to wait until he was old enough at 18.
  • Went to Brighton Beach Primary School, Caulfield Tech and studied civil engineering.
  • Jobs: worked for a financial company; spent 8 years in the Army, learnt to fly, studied gemology and spent more than a year in Vietnam; ran an importing business (semi precious stones and then gifts), worked for Toyota and finally ran a wood yard in Brighton.
  • In 1966 met Ann and a year later they married. They have two children and five grandchildren.
  • Joined Rotary in 1989 - he and Ann have made many friends in their 28 year association with Rotary.

Regarding Rotary, President Bill said:

  • He wants Brighton North to continue being a Club where members are friendly, respectful and fun loving and wants weekly meetings to be like a dinner party. We have fun while doing good things.
  • Avenues of Service – people who have not responded to Ross’s email will be followed up.
  • Survey results – will be looked at and any ideas will be presented to members before implementation. If anyone has further ideas let Ross know.
  • Ross and Bill will be doing the program this year and welcome suggestions for speakers.
