Russell then handed over the meeting to the chair for the evening, Monsieur Pierre “Napoleon” Carney who, with Gallic flair, called for reports.
Secretary Kay relayed an urgent request from District for more Rotarians to register for next year’s conference.
Fellowship – the Christmas party next Wednesday night is at Victoria Golf Club, with pre-meal drinks from 6:45pm. Dress up for Christmas or a party, with gentlemen expected to wear a jacket, but no tie required. Denim of course is right out! Please bring your gift for the Family Life kids or arrange to give it to Gerry or someone going to the dinner if you cannot make it.
International - Don gave us an update on what is happening in the Philippines following the terrible typhoon. The Club is going to donate/send ten of the Lifestraws (some were taken to Tibet recently). These cost about $100 each, but each one can convert contaminated water to drinking water standard for a family of 5 for up to 3 years.
Youthful, vigorous Alison advised that Peter (our police mentor this year) had invited his mentoree Dale and his wife to the Christmas party. She also advised that the Beachside Youth Festival was proceeding on 13th Dec. The Club will run a BBQ and try to move some of our vintage cured sausages. Alison also reported that our ex RYLA attendees, now leaders, Jacqui and Jess had a wonderful time at the last camp. Jacqui had 25 leaders over at her place for a celebratory party – all slept the night. The parents are very impressed on the benefits of the RYLA experience for the girls. But wait, there’s more – Sally-Anne Young, also a previous RYLA attendee is planning to go to Cambodia for some volunteer work and is trying to raise some funds. She has a fundraising BBQ at Mentone Safeway on Saturday 21st December from 10am to 2pm. And finally for a busy Youth committee, we will have a couple of reps at the Brighton Secondary College presentation night on Monday 16th December.
Vocational - Christina advised we have 6 Star of the Sea and 4 Brighton Secondary students going to the Siemens Science experience. Christina then introduced Marg Quinn, who gave us some feedback from the teachers and kids on the reading program. Marg advised the children were very happy to participate in the program, with noticeable improvement in enthusiasm and competency in reading. Also great feedback and thanks from staff – all loved the fact that the local community was supporting the school through the Club’s efforts. Well done to all our readers and our co-ordinator Christina!
Mort then fired up the new website and took us through some of the features – it looks much improved on the old Clubrunner platform and even our resident troglodytes should be able to handle it!
Barb Beed advised that the RC of Brighton beach is having a movie night to raise funds for Uganda’s Orphanage and African Children’s Choir. It costs $20 and is on Friday 10th January from 6:30pm at the Palace cinemas in Dendy plaza. Please contact Margie Desmyth on 9593 3543 for tickets and info. It looks like a good flick – “Philomena” starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan.
The Fact of the Week was courtesy of Rosalie. She gave us a few golf related facts – including that one of the most famous people to die on a golf course was Bing Crosby. And the origins of the word “GOLF”? Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden! And the origin of the word CADDY? Apparently relates to when Mary Queen of Scots played the game – when in France she was provided with protection in the form of some young military officers – in French CADETS – pronounced CADAYS – and this term crossed back to Scotland and is now used for the bag carrier.
Monsieur Pierre then passed the baton back to President Russell who finished with this quote - from a Frenchman:-

The next meeting at the yacht club will be a fellowship night on the 8th Jan14.
The sergeants raised $64, the raffle $60 with $10 won by Peter Killey. The jackpot is now in the high $500’s.
