The Firbank GS and Brighton GS Debating Teams

This year's debate was held at Firbank on Thursday March 5th. The subject was the value and efficacy of shark nets in protecting Australian beach goers.  The case for the affirmative was presented by the Brighton GS team, with the Firbank GS team presenting the negative case.

The debate was introduced by President Anne Cobham and chaired by Christina Rearick. Each speaker in the debate had up to 8 minutes in which to present their argument. In his summing-up, the Adjudicator, Asher Husain, explained that his assessments were made on the basis of ‘matter, manner and method.’ Complimenting both teams on an exciting debate, he awarded victory to the Firbank team, noting the thoroughness of their research and the cogency and enthusiasm of their presentations.
