Brian Turner and Geoff Brearley shared a long friendship through golf, including participation in the Rotary Fellowship of Golf, travelling around the world playing golf.

In April 2011, the Club resolved to honour them by establishing the Brearley/Turner Golf Trophy.  Brian was deeply moved that his name would be recognised in this way, and together he and Geoff ensured the event reflected our Club’s culture, welcoming partners to participate.

The Club’s first golf trip was held at Barnbougle in Tasmania in May 2011.

In the lead-up, we learned that Brian Turner – long-serving Rotarian, outstanding golfer, and great friend - had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was unable to attend.  Brian maintained a single figure handicap for over 60 years. Tragically, Brian passed away shortly after the first Trophy event.  

Geoff Brearley, a Charter Member of Brighton North Rotary and a highly respected figure in the game, also leaves a remarkable legacy.  At Victoria Golf Club, Geoff served as Club Captain from 1985 to 1988 and Club President from 1992 to 1995 and was later honoured with Life Membership.  Sadly, Geoff passed away in November last year.  His contribution to this golf club, both on and off the course, was significant and enduring.

Over 15 years, the event has been held at Barnbougle and Lost Farm in Tasmania, Yarrawonga, Portsea, St Andrews Beach, Thirteenth Beach, Point Lonsdale, Phillip Island, Cape Schanck, Bairnsdale, Cheltenham, Torquay and Inverloch.
