Sarsfield Bushfire Recovery
Sarsfield Community Emergency Preparedness Initiative
When the 2019/20 bushfires tore through Sarsfield, it left 200 properties damaged and 80 homes completely destroyed.
The Rotary Clubs of Brighton North and Glenferrie together with Past District Governor Janne Speirs and members of the East Gippsland Fire Aid Committee from Rotary Clubs in the Sarsfield vicinity stepped in to assist.
RC Brighton North and RC Glenferrie contributed financially towards a Rotary Foundation Global Grant together with several international Rotary Districts and Clubs. The District 9800 Bushfire Appeal also contributed to the Project.
The area of focus for the Global Grant was Economic and Community Development which is directed towards:
"Strengthening communities' economic resilience and adaptive capacity in response to environmental and climate-related hazards and natural disasters; Developing and supporting community-based basic emergency preparedness services to improve economic resilience"
Foundation Global Grants do not cover construction of buildings but cover measures to build up Community capacitance so the Grant was directed towards fitout of an area of the hall to provide and emergency evacuation centre when another bushfire catastrophe occurs
Budget items to do with the hall -
Internal extension fitout | $35,730 |
Commercial Kitchen fitout | $45,247 |
Restrooms / shower room fitout | $6,550 |
Solar panels / roof flood sprinklers | $19,511 |
TOTAL | $107,038 |
Recently the Sarsfield Community Association received a Government Grant to rebuild the hall.
